I’m on their shared servers and have never had a problem. I just looked on the support forums and could not find any issues that have occurred, except when the person made the mistake with settings themselves. I don’t know of any firewall option in the normal packages but they are pretty good about providing custom features at a fair price. I will say it would be better to post a question about what your wanting in the forums as the mods there usually get things done faster than customer support and they(mods) are very helpful.

I was having trouble with canonical domains and 301 redirects, and I tried everything to get it working. I opened a chat session and started chatting about the issue with a customer support specialist. He took a look at everything and spent about 5 minutes troubleshooting before remedying the situation. He was technically competent, and thought to look at issues that I hadn’t. There is always someone competent available to help out, and that is why their support is so great.

What can I say? HostGator is simply the best! I have the Baby Croc package which is only $9.94 a month. This is a very low price but I am getting a LOT for it: unlimited databases, subdomains, ftp accounts, e-mails and 5gb webspace with 75gb monthly bandwidth! The servers are always up and running fast.

Here is a specific example to show how HostGator’s support helped him: I am using Hostgator since october 2005 and until now I didn’t need their support, everything was running well without any problems. Since the 2nd of August someone gained unauthorized access to my Cpanel and I contacted the Livechat a lot since then. I even have the feeling that they already know me The ‘intruder’ somehow gained access to my Cpanel everytime. I tried to change my password everytime by contacting the live-help and asked how I could prevent this. They tried to help me as good as possible but sometimes it was out of their league so I had to contact an admin. I wrote a ticket and was receiving replies to my tickets very quickly with an answer or solution. The ‘intruder’ didn’t access my Cpanel anymore. The support team is doing a great job.

By the way, I love hostgator! It is the best host of all the other host I’ve come across. I moved from sitesell to thirdsphere to dreamhost to avahost to yahoo webhosting and finally to hostgator.

Sitesell got a load of problems I couldn’t work with. No ftp is one.

Thirdsphere was fine but I did not need alot of their tools yet.

Dreamhost had ftp directory and folder structure not according to the standard public_html one so it’s just frustrating working with it.

Avahost was ok in everything except that their knowledge base support structure isn’t exactly fantastic, so I always had to contact helpdesk when I’m trying to find an answer. And helpdesk reply isn’t that fast either.

Yahoo hosting is the worst in my opinion. Dealing with them is a laughing situation. Their support is filled with a bunch of dumb dotz who don’t know what they’re doing, can’t answer your questions properly, take so long to answer and never really help you to solve your problems. Working with them is a complete pain in the ass.

But yahoo webmail plus is the best webmail program I’ve ever come across so I’m using it to read and send all my emails forwarded to it. That’s the ONLY plus factor of yahoo in my opinion.

and then I found hostgator! I was trying to find which was a top rated host once and for all and I kept on doing searches and see which host appeared in the top ranks of various hosting review pages.

At first what I saw was lunar pages. I considered switching to lunar pages for quite a while but then someone in the xsitepro forum mentioned hostgator enthusiastically and I started to consider it.

The tipping point came when I went to www.lunarpagesreview.com and I saw that hostgator was rated by users as the top host of the month.

So I decided to thoroughly check out hostgator. I talked to their live chat (A very useful feature to help you with your problems) and found that their support responds quite well and usually helps me to find the answer that I’m looking for. When I email hostgator support, they also respond soon enough and with far better answers I than I could ever get from yahoo hosting.

The ftp directory, folder structure and cpanel are standard so it’s exactly what I’m looking for. (simple and easy to use)

Their knowledge base and support ticket system is just the way it should be like most decent hosts.

The best is that they offer a monthly payment plan for baby account with free setup. That’s one of the crucial factors I normally look for to judge a hosting company. Lunarpages only offers 3 months paypment minimum with $30 setup.

Hosting companies that allow only 1 year prepaid plan are held in extremely low regard by me unless they offer a 1 year money back gaurantee. In psychology, this is called a commitment manipulation.

Respectable people always give you a choice to stay or leave anytime you want and they never lock you in with anything.

I’m not going to talk about disk space and bandwidth here because for crying out loud, the difference between most hosts don’t even matter at all.

Indeed hostgator is now rated as top of the list and yahoo webhosting is rated at the very bottom! Wow such findings just totally reflect my experiences.

” Hi all, I am a customer of Hostgator since the end of July 2004, having my 1st reseller account (2Gb disc space, 50Gb BWT) and I think the time has come to post a short review of this hosting company.

The registration process for my account was quite simple and easy and the speed of setting up my account was very speedy (about 20 mins!).

I hosted about 15 websites of our customers and up to now I have not received even one complaint about their sites/emails. Their uptime was excellent (almost 100%) although I did noticed some rare speed problems (about 7-8 times within 3 months).

We had no problem using WHM/Cpanel and the Messenger/Email support was very fast and helpful, although I guess that specifically Messenger staff sometimes acts like intermediate to the tech staff for almost all major questions (I guess that’s normal).

I have also called 3-4 times (mainly to ask some presales/upgrade questions) and the telephone was answered very promptly, with no waiting time. I remember one time calling very late at night (due to time difference it was morning here) and still their suport was there and effective.

The only suggestion that I would like to make is to be a little more helpful when speaking on the phone. This does not mean in any way that they were not polite but the feeling that I am receiving when I call them is a little negative - with very short answers and not much explanations until you ask for them - or not as much friendly as I would like to be (maybe that’s my opinion as I am not a native English speaker).

Anyway, I just signed up for my 2nd reseller account and the experience was very positive for one more time! They offered the 1st month for free as I asked and they set it up within 10 mins. And when I sent an email to the sales department (after 5 mins that I signed up for the 2nd account), asking for a free upgrade of my 1st account, they replied within 3 mins that the upgrade to 5Gb was already done! Pretty amazing I think…

Overall I must admit that Hostgator has proved to be the best hosting experience I’ve had for the last 4 years that I host my sites. They can certainly work a little more on the support experience the customer receives, but this does not mean you will have any unanswered questions or delays. It’s nice to sleep calmly at nights and not be afraid whether your sites will be online and a technical team will seriously take care of them if needed. Hostgator is there for me…

I’m coming up on my 6th month anniversary with hostgator and wanted to share my experiences.

Some info about my site:

domain > nfodump.com use > downloads of large (100mb+) dj mixes in mp3 format. there is also a small coppermine gallery with the ‘img’ (for posting to msg boards) plug-in. i use about 19gb of disk space and push around 100gb/mo of files.

Review:

uptime and speed > excellent. my uptime for the 6 month period is 99.96%. according to domaintools.com there are 700-some other domains (i realize this isn’t end-all be-all accurate) so either i’ve totally lucked out or the machine i am on runs very efficiently.

support > because this site is pretty basic, i have not had a need for hostgator’s support. i have been with them one other time in the past and at that time (approx 1 year ago), their ticket response time was approx. 30 minutes.

pricing > i pay 9.95/mo for 100gb of space and 1,000 gb of bandwidth. while i will never come even remotely close to reaching that, it’s nice to know that it is (hopefully) there.

overall > hostgator gets a 5 (out of 5) in my book. they have been good to me with the service they provide, have met my expectations and live up to what they offer on their site.
